Walker Butte is starting a Genius Hour on Fridays during elective classes to pursue creative student-generated projects that expand the school garden, improve the school grounds, support our Green Team (recycling and energy conservation club), create service-learning projects, and design projects, experiments, and lessons for classes at Walker Butte K-8.

Design a rain catchment system
For the younger grades design and install container gardens for classes to grow
Use garden(s) for more inclusion
Create more shade, lower the air temperature, and conserve water.

Have Kinder classes raise worms - compost, habitat, etc.
Use gardens as a place to help students calm down, or get sensory input
Create a desert ecosystem with edible cacti
Use wood chips from around the district to keep soil moisture levels up, recycle, and as compost
Design and install raised bed gardens for our cross cat classrooms
Create outdoor learning labs and spaces for all grade levels.

Start a Farmer’s Market
Have student run classes for community members in how to start a food forest at home.
Anytime students need to write proposals, meet with administrators, or present to organizations, then they are using and learning ELA skills.
